The Gamble of Life

Posted on 15th Jun, 2011 by admin

The truth is that nature is so constructed that everything in life is a sort of gamble. The very random creation of life is purely dependant on the gamble. The eventual development of life through evolution is based on random mutations each of which is a gamble. In this sense, nature thus encourages the survival of the luckiest (the rabbit lucky enough to be born with the fastest genes is the one to survive and progress onward). This is a gamble where the odds are very much in favor of entropy (as is evidenced by the fact that billions of species are now extinct). Even so, with luck, the lottery of life can still be won. Thanks to this luck mankind is here today.

Gambling in the Bible
Online casino gaming as we know it is not often described in the Bible times. This probably does not mean that it wasn’t very common, only that the Bible doesn’t mention it. In fact we know that the Phoenicians had games that resemble our modern card games and that the ancient Egyptians played at dice. Even so, lots are drawn in the Bible on various occasions in a method that probably resembles today’s lotteries. Thus, Joshua locates the sinner amongst the people with a lottery and King Saul attempts a similar lottery after his battle with the Philistines. The country of Israel is divided amongst the twelve tribes via a lottery as well. A wager that is made for money and described in the Bible is Samson’s wager with the Philistines if they should solve his riddle. As you can see, online casinos are not where this whole gambling thing first started.

Gambling in Religion
Many religions condone excessive gambling. The Moslem religion forbids it completely but most religions tend to limit the gambling rather than forbid it absolutely. The same is true with various state laws passed regarding gambling. In most places gambling is regulated and restricted but permitted with certain limitations. Historically, all levels of society have spent time at gambling although the different areas of gambling were often defined by class and social norms.
